TALEBEARERS

Talebearers

Characteristics and Consequences

Sows Discord: Talebearers destroy friendships and cause fighting.

Divides Friendships: They act as a wedge between close companions.

Unreliable: They are often gossips and busybodies who say things they should not, frequently out of idleness.

Dangerous Words: Their words cause deep emotional or social harm.

Forbidden Conduct: It is explicitly commanded not to engage in this behavior.

Related Terms in Scripture

The Bible uses several terms to describe this behavior:

  • Whisperer: One who spreads rumors quietly.
  • Backbiter: One who speaks maliciously against someone in their absence.
  • Tattler/Busybody: One who engages in idle, mischievous talk.
  • False Witness: One who spreads untruths.

Merriam-Webster

A talebearer is a person who indiscreetly or maliciously spreads gossip, rumors, secrets, or scandal, often causing trouble, conflict, or harm to others. They are essentially busybodies or informants who circulate personal information, frequently acting as a catalyst for drama and discord in social or professional settings.

Key Characteristics & Definition

Definition: A person who carries tales (stories or gossip) from one person to another, often revealing secrets.

Function: Talebearers damage reputations and create division, often thriving on drama and negative information.

Alternative Terms: Known as a blabbermouth, tattler, tattletale, rumor-monger, busybody, or scandalmonger.

Origin: The term is formed from "tale" and "bearer," appearing in English contexts as early as the 14th century to describe those who reveal secrets.

As a Christian do I have to spend time with talebearers?

As a Christian, you are not required to spend time with talebearers (gossips) and are, in fact, encouraged to avoid them to prevent gossip from harming your spirit and spreading division. Proverbs instructs believers to avoid those who "go about as a talebearer" because such people sow strife and harm reputations.

Key Biblical Principles Regarding Talebearers

Avoidance: Proverbs 20:19 (KJV) states, "...meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips," warning against deep association or friendship with those who spread gossip.

Protection of Soul: Listening to talebearers allows gossip to "wound" your inner self, polluting your mind and heart.

Preventing Division: Talebearers are associated with causing contention and dividing friends.

Active Response: Instead of participating, you are encouraged to stop the conversation and address the sin or physically walk away if the behavior continues.

How to Handle Situations with Talebearers

Do Not Encourage Them: Avoid asking for details or lending your ears to their tales, as this encourages their behavior.

Confront the Behavior: If possible, tell them directly that what they are doing is gossip and that it is wrong.

Set Boundaries: If they persist, separate yourself from the situation (Proverbs 20:19, 25:23).

Focus on Edification: Rather than being a "tale-bearer" (spreading rumors), seek to be a "praise-bearer" (speaking well of others).

Note: This does not mean ignoring sinful behavior that must be addressed, but rather avoiding malicious, unnecessary, and destructive gossip, say.

What does God say about a talebearer?

A talebearer in Scripture is defined as a gossiper, whisperer, or slanderer who reveals secrets, causes conflict, and divides friends. Proverbs describes their words as deep wounds or delicious morsels that damage reputations, advising against associating with them. The Bible strongly forbids this behavior, calling it a sin that causes discord and strife.

Key Scriptures Regarding Talebearers

Proverbs 11:13: "A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter".

Proverbs 26:20: "For lack of wood the fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases".

Proverbs 26:22: "The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly".

Leviticus 19:16: "You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD".

Proverbs 20:19: "Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler".
