Root Cause - Better Roots

by Pastor Robert Morris

Scripture Verses

Ephesians 4:31-32

31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Hebrew 12:12-15

12 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.

14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;

God has called us to defeat evil with good. Do not repay evil with evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:15 (NKJV)
15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.

Love Your Enemies

Luke 6:27-29 (NKJV)
27 “But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.

God will repay. Overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:19-21 (NKJV)
19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Do not take other peoples sins into your body. Forgive and release. Do not retain their sins.

John 20:23 (NKJV)
23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

What you do with anger is your choice. Don't go along with the anger.

Ephesians 4:26-27 (NKJV)
26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil.

Ephesians 4:31-32N (NKJV)
31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

James 3:8-12 (NKJV)
8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.

Being a Liar

1 John 4:20-21 (NKJV)
20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21 And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.

Proverbs 10:18 (NKJV)

18 Whoever hides hatred has lying lips,
And whoever spreads slander is a fool.

God's character has to be our character. Forgiveness!

Mark 11:25-26 (NKJV) Forgiveness and Prayer
25 “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”

Love and forgiveness are superior to Bitterness.

  • Choose Compassion not Bitterness
  • Get rid of Accusation
  • Despite your feelings you must choose to forgive
  • Hate the sin, but you can not hate the person

Bitterness is based on Unforgiveness.

If unforgiveness is  present, God will not work for you.

Matthew 6:14-15

For if you forgive men their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Bitterness wants me to act its way.

  1. Unforgiveness - if someone offends you. It keeps a record of wrongs. If you don't let it go.
  2. Resentment - it thinks about all the records of wrong.
  3. Retaliation - getting even. With-holding good from them.
  4. Anger & Wrath - verbalizing (the root of all split ups)
  5. Hatred - physical elimination, one of us has got to go.
  6. Violence - act out, action. I'm going to remove you and destroy you physically. It generates fear.
  7. Murder - with the tongue = slander and gossip

Bitterness will always spread to others.

Hebrew 12:12-15

12 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.

14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;

Bitterness will direct itself in three ways:

  1. Against Others
  2. Against Ourselves
  3. Against God

Forgive Others (70 x 7 = 490)

Matthew 18:20-22 (NKJV) The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant
20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”
21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”
22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

Jesus commands us not to hate our enemies, but love them and pray for them.

Matthew 5:43-48 (NKJV) Love Your Enemies

43 “You have heard that it was said,‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Proverbs 10:12 (NKJV)

12 Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all sins.

You are your brothers keeper.

1 John 3:10-16 (NKJV) The Imperative of Love
10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. 11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, 12 not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.
13 Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
The Outworking of Love
16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren

Self-Bitterness/forgive yourself

1 Corinthians 11:31 (NKJV)
31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged.

If you don't deal with Bitterness. It's going to bring a lot of destruction.

Galatians 5:15

15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!

Repent & Cast it out. Do each one separately for all 7 Armors of Bitterness

Luke 11:20-22 (NKJV)
20 But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace. 22 But when a stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him all his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoils.
